The Purple Line's Final Silver Spring Wire Work Runs on a Night Schedule. Plan Fenton Village Around It.

October 8, 2026

"It's just constant road changes," a resident told The Wash in September. "A road could be perfectly fine one day, and then they decide to switch up lanes that are drivable because they need to work on a different lane."

That has been the feel of the east side of downtown Silver Spring for years. The next seven weeks look different, and the published schedule says so. The remaining downtown closures from the Maryland Transit Administration are overnight closures for installing the overhead catenary wires that will power the trains. They start at 9 or 10 p.m. and end before dawn. Fenton Village's daytime is mostly left alone this fall. The friction is concentrated after dark, which is the time of day its bars, lounges and late kitchens depend on.

The trains are already running on the wires

The work is close to done. In August, Source of the Spring reported that live-wire testing had reached Silver Spring. Trains were running between Lyttonsville and Bethesda, the project was more than 90 percent complete, and the overhead wires were energized. The project's official timeline shows end-to-end system training starting in spring 2027 and passenger service beginning in winter 2027.

That means the last stretch of overhead wire has to go up over the streets east of Georgia Avenue. Crews can't string wire over a street with traffic on it, so the closures happen when traffic is lightest.

The fall calendar, with the closures in it

This is the season in date order, with the construction windows next to the events that bring people downtown. All closure dates are "on or about," per the official Purple Line updates page.

  1. Through October 7: AFI Silver's 37th Latin American Film Festival continues at 8633 Colesville Road, with filmmaker appearances and embassy-hosted events.
  2. Sunday, October 11, 1 to 9 p.m.: The Bachata–Salsa Festival at Veterans Plaza, with lessons, performances, live music, dancing and food vendors.
  3. October 11 through 23, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.: Wayne Avenue closes overnight between Dale Drive and Manchester Road. Resident and pedestrian access is maintained.
  4. Thursday, October 15, 6 p.m.: The Silver Spring Community Advisory Team meets virtually. Purple Line NOW says it hopes trail progress will be discussed at this round of meetings.
  5. October 23 through November 5: AFI Silver's "Halloween on Screen" series includes "Nosferatu" with live musical accompaniment, "The Evil Dead," "Kwaidan," "Carrie," "The Omen," and "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" with a live shadowcast.
  6. Sunday, October 25, noon to 5 p.m.: Silver Spring Fall-O-Ween at Veterans Plaza, with costume parades for kids and pets, craft vendors and treats. Admission is free and it happens rain or shine.
  7. October 26 through November 6, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.: Wayne Avenue closes overnight between Fenton Street and Cedar Street.
  8. November 8 through 17, 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.: The Wayne Avenue and Fenton Street intersection closes overnight.
  9. Saturday, November 21, 10 a.m.: The Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade starts at Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street and heads south on Georgia Avenue.

The events and the closures barely overlap. Fall-O-Ween wraps up at 5 p.m. the day before the Wayne Avenue closure between Fenton and Cedar starts. The Wayne and Fenton intersection work is scheduled to end four days before the parade lines up a block away. The Bachata–Salsa Festival ends at 9 p.m. on October 11, the same hour the first overnight closure is set to begin. That closure is on the Dale Drive to Manchester Road stretch of Wayne, out toward Sligo Creek, not the downtown core.

If you saw September coverage giving October 5 through 15 for the Wayne and Fenton intersection, those dates are out of date. The Wash reported that window on September 15. The current notice moves the intersection work to November 8 through 17. Schedules have moved before. Check the official updates page before planning a late night out.

Who the night schedule affects

The same Wash story described what earlier overnight closures were like for people who work downtown. Elodie Tagro, a bartender at Ivela Lounge, said she had to park somewhere else and walk in. Lidiya Lemma, a server at Langano Ethiopian Bar & Restaurant, said customers often can't find a spot nearby and don't want to pay to park "because they just want to grab their food." Workers also said the closures start in the middle of business hours, which makes getting home at closing time harder.

Some of the daytime conditions are long-term rather than seasonal. Bonifant Street east of Georgia Avenue is being permanently reduced to one-way eastbound, with no parking on the south side. Crews are finishing utility, storm drain, curb and sidewalk work there through fall 2026. The Dixon Avenue and Bonifant Street intersection stays closed through October, but access to businesses and the parking garage on Bonifant is maintained. Wayne Avenue between Sligo Creek Parkway and Fenton Street is down to one lane in each direction, with no street parking in the work zones.

So the curb is not much use on these blocks this fall, at any hour. The garages are.

Where to park

Montgomery County runs several garages and lots within walking distance of Fenton Village:

  • Garage 4, Fenton Street Village Garage, 8110 Fenton St.
  • Garage 3, Thayer-Silver Spring Garage, 913 Silver Spring Ave.
  • Garage 5, Bonifant-Dixon Garage, 1101 Bonifant Dr.
  • Lot 38, 920 Bonifant St.
  • Lot 29, 811 Easley St.
  • Garage 60, Wayne Avenue Garage, 921 Wayne Ave.

The cost concern Lemma described has a partial fix. The Fenton Village Parking District gives $2 off parking through the ParkMobile app with the promo code 2FORSS. Fenton Village, Inc. says the code works up to five times a month and covers one to two hours of parking per session at the Fenton Street Village Garage and other participating locations, including Garage 3 and Lot 29.

Garage 60 is on Wayne Avenue, which is the street getting the overnight wire work. If you plan to leave after 9 p.m. between October 26 and November 6, look at the posted detour map before choosing that garage over Garage 4 or Garage 3.

Fenton Village by daylight

Because the closures don't start until evening, a breakfast, lunch or early dinner in Fenton Village this fall comes with none of the overnight detours.

The newest opening is on the north end. Easy Like Sunday, a brunch restaurant from Baltimore, opened in late July on the ground floor of the Central apartment building at 8455 Fenton Street, in the space El Sapo Cuban Social Club used to occupy. It's open daily from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., so it closes six hours before any of this fall's overnight closures begin. The menu includes blueberry-lemon pancakes with sweet ricotta, crab cake benedicts and a Tuscan Bake. Co-owner Antonios Kokolis told Bethesda Magazine the restaurant wants families to feel comfortable even with a full bar.

Bonifant Street, between the Dixon closure and the library station work, has the densest stretch of small kitchens in Fenton Village. In May, the Taste the World food event named Kefa Café at 963 Bonifant, Kook Kai's Thai Noodles at 939, Roger Miller Restaurant at 941 and Sweet Sweet Kitchen at 904 among its participants. Café via Roma at 911 Bonifant came back in October 2025 after a temporary closure related to construction. On Fenton Street itself, the downtown directory lists Fenton Café at 8311, The Breakfast Club at 8240, Effoi Restaurant at 8233 and Black Lion Cafe at 8420. The directory says it pulls from multiple sources, so checking hours before you go is a good idea.

Two of those businesses just got state support. The Purple Line small business grant awards announced September 29 include $35,000 for Café via Roma and $15,000 for Black Lion Cafe. The program gives grants of up to $50,000 to eligible businesses within a quarter mile of the tracks. Applications for the current round opened September 29 and are due November 7, which matters for anyone who owns a shop on these blocks. The Wash reported that the program has awarded $2.6 million since 2025.

The Wayne Avenue blocks near the library work on the same daytime schedule. The Brigadier General Charles E. McGee Library at 900 Wayne Ave stays reachable on foot while the Silver Spring Library station is built beside it. ADA-compliant access is kept up via Wayne Avenue and Fenton Street. Nearby, the directory lists the Round House Theatre Education Center at 925 Wayne and Ghar-E-Kabab at 944 Wayne.

The trail connection is the open question

The overnight closures have published end dates. The trail work doesn't. The Capital Crescent Trail segment from the Talbot Street bridge toward the Silver Spring Metro connection with the Metropolitan Branch Trail was still a construction zone as of Purple Line NOW's September 23 newsletter. The same issue said the Spring Street Bridge still has paving left and no firm reopening date. The official project page says the county is still working through substantial-completion items before the bridge opening can be scheduled. If your weekend ride or walk uses that connection, the October 15 Silver Spring CAT meeting is the next scheduled chance to ask about it.

Lindene follows Purple Line closure notices, garage access and which Fenton Village blocks are opening up again, because those details shape what daily life near each future station looks like.
