There's a No Regrets Pizza sticker in a ground-floor window at 4925 Fairmont Avenue, under The Sophia apartment building and next door to Paris Baguette. When Bethesda Magazine's Bethesda Today photographed it in early October, the shop behind the window was about half built. In January the target was May 2026. The new target is November, and the county still has to inspect it.
That sticker sums up the season. Most of the downtown restaurants announced last spring for "this fall" are still behind paper and signage as October ends. For anyone planning a dinner out, that means the dining map you'll actually use this winter is being drawn on three streets: Westbard Square, Woodmont Avenue on Bethesda Row, and the 4900 block of Fairmont Avenue. The fall announcements from last spring are a poor guide to it.
Two Openings That Already Count
Two places from this year's list are serving now, and neither was one of the big fall announcements.
Shake Shack at Element 28, 7535 Old Georgetown Road, was scheduled to open September 30. The date moved to Friday, October 2, as The MoCo Show reported. The chain's Bethesda location page now shows daily hours and takes pickup and delivery orders.
The Food Market at Hampden House on Hampden Lane is the restaurant's third Maryland location. When Bethesda Magazine reported it in March, the owner expected to open in May. Its Bethesda page now lists lunch, brunch and dinner hours along with pickup ordering. The page gives the address as 4720 Hampden Lane, while the March report said 4700.
So the comfort-food dinner room and the burger counter are already open. Everything below is still on the way.
Bethesda Row and Westbard Are Showing Permits, Not Dates
The two biggest fall openings have both cleared permit and licensing steps since summer. Neither has an opening date yet.
Prato is taking the former Matchbox space at 7278 Woodmont Avenue on Bethesda Row. It will be the Italian restaurant's second location and its first outside Winter Park, Florida, where the original has run for more than 14 years. Its parent company, Park Lights Hospitality, also plans a Nashville location for early 2027. The MoCo Show reported in late September that a $1.37 million permit had been issued for the interior build-out. That came after a liquor license hearing with Montgomery County Alcohol Beverage Services scheduled for August. Prato's own site promises house-made pastas and wood-fired pizzas "in late Fall 2026." No exact date has been announced. When the expansion was announced earlier this year, Park Lights Hospitality CEO Scott Bowman said, "We couldn't think of a better or more vibrant community than Bethesda to open our second Prato."
Our Mom Eugenia is the opening with the deepest local ties. Its "coming soon" signs are up at Westbard Square, The MoCo Show reported on October 21. The family-owned Greek restaurant already has three Northern Virginia locations: Great Falls, the Mosaic District in Fairfax, and Shirlington in Arlington. Bethesda will be its fourth, its first in Maryland and its first in a standalone building. It's named for chef Eugenia Markesini Hobson, who grew up on the Greek island of Zakynthos and once cooked in the Bethesda area. Her sons, Alex and Phil, opened the first restaurant in Great Falls in 2016. The Westbard building will have a year-round outdoor patio and more catering, pickup and delivery options. Regency Centers, the developer, pulled a $1.7 million permit for the space. The restaurant's own site still says fall 2026, and no exact date has been confirmed.
Taken together, these two projects represent more than $3 million in permitted build-out on Woodmont and at Westbard. They're also the main reason this winter's restaurant news will come from the edges of downtown and the Row instead of the Wisconsin Avenue core.
Fairmont Avenue Is Becoming the Takeout Block
One block of Fairmont Avenue in Woodmont Triangle is picking up two counter-service openings.
No Regrets Pizza Co. is a locally owned shop selling Roman, Neapolitan and New York-style pies. Its first location, a full-service restaurant in North Bethesda, opened in May 2024. The Fairmont Avenue shop is a fast-casual format, built around a takeaway counter with limited indoor seating. Founder Richard Weiner told Bethesda Today that the menu will cover all three pizza styles plus pastas, salads, sandwiches and desserts. The pedestrian walkway beside The Sophia offers several places to sit outside. Its neighbors include ala, Bistro Provence and Medium Rare.
On the same block, Taco Bamba has claimed 4905 Fairmont Avenue. In June, The MoCo Show reported the taqueria planned to open later in 2026. The hours and location section of its Bethesda page now says "Opening Early 2027," even though the intro on the same page still says the Bethesda era "kicks off this fall."
Once both are open, the stretch from 4905 to 4925 Fairmont will have pizza, tacos and Paris Baguette close together, all built for quick counter visits. Fairmont doesn't have anything quite like that yet, and it fills a different need than the sit-down rooms on Bethesda Row. The first piece is aiming for November and the second for early next year, so the block will come together during the colder months.
The Wisconsin Avenue Side Lost a Room and Is Waiting on Another
The changes along Wisconsin Avenue this fall have mostly been subtractions.
True Food Kitchen at 7100 Wisconsin Avenue served its last meal on Sunday, October 4. The next day, the national chain announced a Chapter 11 filing and the closure of 12 locations, Bethesda among them, as Bethesda Today reported. The restaurant opened in 2017 in a 6,500-square-foot space with an open kitchen and a patio, and that space had been listed for lease since June. The Montgomery County location at Rio in Gaithersburg is still open. Bethesda Beacon reported October 6 that no replacement tenant had been announced.
A few blocks north, Daily Provisions, a New York café and restaurant brand, is planning a location on the ground floor of The Charles at 7342 Wisconsin Avenue. It will be the brand's first Maryland location. When Bethesda Magazine broke the news in March, a company representative confirmed the site but had no opening timeline. No timeline has been announced since.
The Opening With No Date at All
One project on Old Georgetown Road doesn't fit the restaurant pattern. Area resident Craig Hillman bought the historic Bethesda Community Store and plans to reopen it as a general store and café. "I'm excited to bring the community into the process of reviving the local general store, and I hope it sparks imitators across Montgomery County," he said in a statement first reported by the Washington Business Journal and carried by Bethesda Today on September 17. No opening date has been set. Of all the projects here, it's the one most tied to a specific Bethesda building and history, which may make it the one neighbors watch most closely.
The Order to Expect Them
Based on what each operator has said publicly as of late October 2026, here is the likely sequence:
- Open now: Shake Shack at Element 28 and The Food Market at Hampden House.
- Targeting November: No Regrets Pizza at 4925 Fairmont Avenue, once construction and county inspections are done.
- Fall 2026, no date set: Our Mom Eugenia at Westbard Square, with signs already up.
- Late fall 2026, no date set: Prato at 7278 Woodmont Avenue.
- Early 2027: Taco Bamba at 4905 Fairmont Avenue.
- No timeline announced: Daily Provisions at The Charles, the Bethesda Community Store revival, and whatever replaces True Food Kitchen at 7100 Wisconsin Avenue.
If the dates hold, Bethesda's restaurant openings will be spread from November through the first months of 2027, with Westbard and the Fairmont block changing the most.
